Free.

Grass. Trees. Sun and wind and salt air.

Freedom.

He knew them all on sight, but to kneel down and touch grass...it was so soft as he let his fingers hover just above, the tips tickling his palm and making him smile. Pressing his hand down, he reveled in its damp, springy texture.

What’s it like outside, Sydney? With grass and trees and the sky?

Never mind, Jarod...trust me, you’re much better off here rather than out in the dirt. Now focus on the simulation.

Curling his fingers into the grass, he laughed softly at the feel of soft, vaguely damp earth giving beneath his fingers. Digging up a good, solid handful of dirt, he brought it to his nose and inhaled.

Musky and dark, sliced with the sharp freshness of the grass. It *smelled* damp...he could almost imagine he smelled rain in the earth crumbling through his fingers, rain from the sky above...

Tilting his head back, Jarod realized that the color of the sky could never be simulated, nor captured in a photograph. Not properly, anyway...never in his life had the color blue been so dazzling and endless and *real* before. Shutting his eyes, he felt the warmth of the sun beating on his face, the cool touch of an ocean breeze caressing his skin and stirring his hair.

Jarod knew little of sensuality, but knew he was experiencing it for the first time, although he didn’t yet associate the word with all the countless sensations and emotions coursing through him.

He wanted to stay in the wild forever. Feel the sun, and wait for a day when snow would come and he could see it gleaming in the light of the sun. He wanted to run through the trees and watch the waves beat against the shores of Blue Cove...

But he had more to see. He had places to go and things to do.

He knew this was what Columbus felt when he discovered a new world...when Neil Armstrong landed on the moon. He’d read about and simulated these events...he knew what it was to stand on the brink of a great adventure, a great discovery that would change the world.

His first taste of freedom was one such event...because now that Jarod had the world in his sights, he was never going to let it go.

“Young man? Are you all right?”

Jarod glanced up with a warm smile at the elderly woman who now stood before him in the middle of Blue Cove Central Park. Rising to his feet, he brushed the dirt from his hand with a nod. “Yes, I am...thank you for your concern, though.”

“Oh, not at all...you just seemed so dazed for a moment, I thought perhaps you’d been playing too rough in that Frisbee game over there.”

Jarod looked over his shoulder, where a group of young men were, in fact, playing with a Frisbee, then laughed and shook his head as he turned back to the elderly woman. “No...although it does look like a wonderful game. I was wondering if you could help me with something, though.”

“Certainly! What can I do for you, Mr....?”

“Lincoln...Jarod Lincoln. I’m not familiar with this area, I’m afraid...could you tell me where I might be able to purchase a bus ticket to New York?...”
